  • Nancy's first efforts with brush and ink were traditional in the sense they utilized India ink with brush, typical of American/European ink painting. After setting up light sketches on her prepared paper, the ink drawing/painting would develop through brush application in layers of light to dark ink washes. Then, watercolor in tones of umbers and sienna's were added to provide 'warmth' and enhance the images. Drawing lines were of India ink and pen and/or brush. These paintings were rendered on standard Arches cold press papers, prepared same as for watercolor paintings, i.e., soaked and stretched. It was her years of sketching and painting with India ink that prompted Nancy to seek more skill, exploring, studying, and eventually producing her Chinese ink on rice paper paintings.
